A place to call home – Ishaq’s story
11 Dec 2023
“I arrived in the UK from Syria in summer 2023. My friend told me about Farhat, their Employment Adviser on the Refugee Employability Programme (REP), and after asking my Work Coach at Jobcentre Plus about this, they assisted me with the referral process.
“I was so happy when I received a call from Farhat at REP, I had heard so many good things and I was looking forward to meeting her and the rest of the team. During my first appointment, Farhat was very empathetic to my situation and vowed to help me.
“Unfortunately, soon after joining the service, I received an eviction letter, stating that I was to leave my accommodation within seven days. Obviously distressed, I called Farhat who invited me into the office the next day.
“Farhat booked a private room for my appointment and another Case Worker, Vanya, was on board with helping me too. Together they went through several websites and made many calls to try and help with my situation, and Vanya provided me with guidance on searching methods and formats.
“After two days, Farhat emailed me the details of an agency, who helped me to secure a room which is nice and homely for me.”
The following day, Farhat and Ishaq started looking at suitable, local employment opportunities for Ishaq, building on his previous experience as a carpenter. Together, they created a new CV which highlighted Ishaq’s carpentry skills. Farhat said: “Just by creating this CV and putting down in writing what skills he had to offer, really boosted Ishaq’s confidence in searching and applying for jobs. I am thrilled that he has found work in this job sector.”
Ishaq shared: “Just one week later, I was able to start my new job as a Carpenter. I am so happy, and I can’t thank Farhat, Vanya and the team at REP enough!”
